I thought I'd just give you the 'bare bones' of an
induction that I use fairly regularly in my consulting room. It
seems to work well with almost everybody, and especially so with
the analytical personality. The professionals amongst you will easily
be able to 'fill out' this skeletal idea effectively; if you're
new, or fairly new, then it probably would not be a particularly
good idea to experiment with this until you have plenty of experience
- which is one of the reasons that a complete script is not given.
There are many scripts that are more suitable for you elsewhere
on my site. Go there now.
Note that it can actually produce the so-called 'Coma' or 'Esdaile
State' quite easily in some clients, though it will certainly not
do this every time. To rouse your client from the 'Coma' state,
simply tell them, quietly, that if they do not 'come up from where
you are' when you reach the count of 10, they will never be able
to reach this delightful state again...and they will do as you ask!
After a suitable preamble and settling down phase, continue with:
"Now I want you to imagine yourself going into a sort of suspended
animation... a state of suspended animation in some warm, comfortable,
safe place, where it's safe to just let your body just be... so
that it's ok if you begin to lose touch... suspended, floating,
drifting..."
Follow this up with more of the same, and suggestions for 'losing
touch' with physical sensation, etc. Then:
"... so that you can soon begin to notice a wonderful sensation
where it seems to you that you are just your thoughts... your energies...
your actual spirit... a wonderful place where you know you are more
in touch with your real self than ever before..."
More of this sort of thing, observing for increasing hypnotic phenomenae.
Then:
"... and every time I say the word 'down' you will find yourself
drifting deeper and deeper... down... becoming twice as relaxed
as you were before... twice as relaxed as you were... whenever I
say that word... down... and you just allowing yourself to drift
in this warm and comfortable, safe place, where you are just your
energies, just your spirit... drifting deeper and deeper... down..."
etc.
I've used this method with a lot of clients now and have found
it to be almost universally effective. The 'Coma' state is characterised
by the disappearance of the hypnotic flush into a pallor and very
slow respiration/pulse. Catatonia/catalepsy sometimes shows itself
as well, though this state is not necessary for normal consulting
room work and I don't usually make any effort to take a client that
deep. This induction method seems to be particularly useful when
working with stress-related issues.
